Saturday, January 14, 2012
by Frank Martin
It will be a battle of youth versus experience when Texas Longhorns travels to Columbia to face No. 9 Missouri Tigers. The Tigers, who rank third nationally in scoring at 83.9 points per game, are led by four senior starters, while the Longhorns start three freshmen and rely on three more off the bench.
First-year Missouri coach Frank Haith worked as an assistant and associate head coach under Texas' Rick Barnes from 2001 to 2004, helping guide the Longhorns to a Final Four and two Sweet 16 appearances.
This will be the second time they've met as head coaches, as Barnes' Longhorns beat Haith's Miami Hurricanes in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

Texas Longhorns (12-4): J'Covan Brown is the Longhorns' go-to player offensively, as he's tops in the Big 12 in scoring at 18.1 points per game. Julien Lewis, a freshman guard, led Texas in scoring for the second time this season with 16 points off the bench on 3-of-3 shooting from long range.
Missouri Tigers (15-1): The Tigers are off to their third-best start in program history and bounced back nicely after their first loss of the year in an 86-79 victory at Iowa State. Six different players reached double figures, led by Matt Pressey's 14 points. Marcus Denmon, a senior guard, scored a season-low six points but he's second in the Big 12 at 17.9 points per contest. Missouri has scored less than 75 points only once all season.
